Day 3: Women of the Bible

Hagar

Key scriptures: Genesis 16, 21:8-21, Galatians 4:22-31

Her name is Egyptian and means "fugitive" or "immigrant."

Hagar was a foreigner and a slave. She let her pride overtake her when she became a wife to Abraham. She suffered harsh punishment for her mistake. When she heard God's voice, she obeyed it. Because of her obedience, God promised her that her son would be the father of a great nation.

Hagar probably became a slave to Abraham and Sarah when they left Egypt. She proved herself trustworthy and became Sarah's maidservant. Later, Hagar became the surrogate mother for Sarah's son. This was common practice in the day for infertile women who wanted children.
